DENVER, November 15—Regular unleaded
gasoline prices have never reached $3 per gallon on average in
November until this year. Despite much higher gas prices for this
Thanksgiving travel period, AAA Colorado expects a slight increase
in Coloradoans who will be traveling 50 or miles from home this
Thanksgiving compared to last year.
“Because Coloradoans perceive travel
as a right, they are finding ways around such challenges as the
increased cost of gasoline and are still traveling,” said
Sandra Barnes, AAA Colorado’s Director of Travel.
“Overall, our travel agency is as busy as last year when it
comes to booking for Thanksgiving travel. The only difference is
that some travelers are cutting costs by staying at less expensive
hotels, eating at less expensive restaurants or cutting out travel
expenses they don’t absolutely need.” |

“The legislative package the House
and Senate Republicans are unveiling today confirms our commitment
to improving our transportation system through real solutions and
without a tax increase.”
That was the message from Republican
leaders in the Senate and House today during a media availability
to discuss their transportation proposals for the 2008 legislative
session.
“Coloradans are already sending
enough of their tax dollars to Denver,” said House Republican
Leader Mike May, R-Parker. “We are proposing that the
legislature prioritize transportation spending and start spending
transportation dollars more wisely; our package does that without
asking for a tax increase.” |

Funding for water projects throughout
Colorado will be restored despite President Bush’s veto as
the United States Senate today successfully voted to override the
President’s veto on the Water Resources Development Act
(WRDA) by 79-14. The House of Representatives earlier this week
also successfully voted to override the President’s veto by
362-54. WRDA contains over $120 million for critical water-related
projects in Colorado included at the request of Senator Salazar.
The report authorizes federal spending on water development,
infrastructure, flood control and other projects conducted by the
Army Corps of Engineers and the Bureau of Reclamation.
“Today we were able to override the
President’s veto and will now be able to move forward on
providing funding for urgent water projects that will have critical
and long lasting impact in Colorado,” said Senator Salazar.
“Today the Congress stood up to the President and we stood up
for the farmers, ranchers, and communities of Colorado that rely on
the precious amount of water the projects in the bill help
provide.” |
