The Federal Reserve cut interest rates
again Wednesday, lowering the federal funds rate 50 basis points
(bps), to 3.0%. The 125 bps cut in only nine days is a record since
the Fed has been operating on the federal funds rate. The
President’s State of the Union address had few new economic
proposals aside from the stimulus package, which is being held up
in the Senate. The slew of economic releases this week
included:
• Payrolls dropped 17,000 in January,
the first drop in four years, but some of the shock was offset by
the upward revision of December to 82,000 from the 18,000 reported
last month, and the drop in the unemployment rate to 4.9%.
• Fourth-quarter real GDP climbed a
meager 0.6%, with inventories taking most of the strength out of
the report. |
